Budgeting Basics: Make the Monthly Number Happen
En español: Una meta en papel es fácil; mover el dinero cada mes es lo difícil. Tres hábitos hacen casi todo el trabajo: una división simple del presupuesto, pagarte a ti primero y un pequeño fondo de emergencia inicial.
A goal on paper is easy; moving the money every month is the hard part. Three habits do most of the work:
- Use a simple split. The 50/30/20 rule is a good starting point: about 50% of take-home pay for needs, 30% for wants, 20% for savings and extra debt payments. Adjust the percentages to your life — having a split matters more than the exact numbers.
- Pay yourself first. Move your savings amount into a separate account on payday, before spending starts — not whatever happens to be left at month's end.
- Build a starter cushion first. Aim for $500–$1,000 in an emergency fund before investing, so one car repair doesn't wipe out months of progress.
