Tool 10 — About this tool
What this Etsy profit calculator does
This Etsy profit calculator shows what one sale actually leaves in your pocket after Etsy takes its cut — all of its cuts, stacked together. Most new sellers do the head-math of 'price minus materials' and call the rest profit. Etsy disagrees: there is a 6.5% transaction fee on the item price plus shipping, a $0.20 listing fee, and payment processing of about 3% + $0.25 on every order. Together, on a typical small order, they quietly eat around a tenth of everything the buyer paid.
A quick example
Run the defaults: a $20 item with $5 shipping charged is a $25 sale total. The transaction fee is $1.63, the listing fee $0.20, and processing $1.00 — total Etsy fees of $2.83. Subtract your $8 of materials and $4 of real shipping cost and your profit is $10.18 per sale, a 40.7% margin. Now drag the price down to $12 and watch the margin fall apart — the fixed fees ($0.20 + $0.25) punish cheap items hardest, which is why so many 'bargain' Etsy listings lose money politely.
Go deeper: see the full Etsy fee table in Guide 19 → — it sits next to real product ideas, prices and startup costs if you are still choosing what to sell.
How to use it — 3 steps
- Enter your item price and what one item costs you to make or buy — materials, packaging, the lot.
- Enter the shipping you charge the buyer, and what shipping actually costs you. If they differ, the difference is profit or loss too.
- Read your profit per sale, total fees, margin, and how much of the sale total you keep after fees. Price until the margin is at least 30–40%.
Who it is for
New Etsy sellers pricing their first listings, printable and digital-product sellers sanity-checking a 'passive income' idea, and anyone whose first payout was mysteriously smaller than expected. It is equally useful before running a discount.
Honest limitations
The offsite-ads fee (12–15%) is not included — it only applies if Etsy advertises your item and it sells through that ad, but when it hits, it hits hard. Currency conversion fees vary if you sell in another currency, promoted listings and Etsy Ads cost extra on top, and processing rates differ slightly outside the US. Treat the result as your margin on a normal, non-ad sale. Estimates only — educational, not financial advice.
FAQ
Etsy Profit Calculator — common questions
What fees does Etsy charge in 2026?
Three standard fees: a 6.5% transaction fee on the item price plus shipping, a $0.20 listing fee per item (which renews every 4 months, or right after a sale if you have more in stock), and payment processing of about 3% + $0.25 per order. This calculator adds all three together so you see one honest total.
What is the Etsy offsite ads fee?
If Etsy advertises your item off Etsy — in search results or social feeds — and it sells, Etsy charges an extra 12–15% on top of the normal fees. It only applies to sales that come through those ads, and shops above a certain size cannot opt out. This calculator leaves it out, so treat the result as your margin on a normal, non-ad sale.
How often do I pay the $0.20 listing fee?
Once each time a listing is created or renewed. Listings last 4 months; when one expires, renewing costs another $0.20, and after a sale the listing renews automatically — another $0.20 — if you still have quantity available. It is small per item, but it quietly adds up across a big shop.
What is a healthy profit margin on Etsy?
Aim for at least 30–40% after ALL fees and costs, not just materials. Under 20% leaves no room for ads, discount sales, refunds, or a slow month — and it usually means one surprise bill wipes out a week of profit. If the margin is thin, raise the price, cut the cost, or charge shipping properly.
