Savings Goal Calculator

Turn any goal — an emergency fund, a car, a deposit — into one monthly number you can actually plan around.

Please enter valid numbers: a goal above $0, current savings of $0 or more, and at least 1 month.

Required monthly saving—
Goal amount—
Already saved—
Still left to save—

Estimates only — educational, not financial advice. A simple division: the same amount every month, no interest along the way. A high-yield savings account would get you there slightly faster.

About this tool

What this savings goal calculator does

A goal like "save $10,000" feels abstract until it becomes a monthly number. This savings goal calculator does that one honest division: it takes your target, subtracts what you have already saved, and spreads what is left across the months you have. No interest, no investment growth, no optimistic assumptions — just the amount that has to move out of your spending money each month for the goal to happen on time.

A quick example

With the defaults above — a $10,000 goal, $1,000 already saved, and 12 months to get there — the required monthly saving is $750. If that number makes you wince, the calculator is doing its job: push the deadline to 18 months and the monthly figure drops to $500, or raise the starting savings and watch what is left shrink. Small changes to the plan beat quietly hoping the money appears.

How to use it — 3 steps

  1. Enter the total amount you want to reach — a deposit, a car, a course, an emergency fund.
  2. Enter what you have already saved toward this specific goal, even if it is $0.
  3. Enter how many months you have, and read the required monthly saving, plus exactly how much is still left to save.

Who it is for

Anyone saving for a specific purchase with a deadline, students building a first emergency fund, and people who want to test whether a goal date is realistic before committing to it. It is equally useful in reverse: if the monthly number is impossible, extending the deadline by a few months shows you exactly how much breathing room that buys.

Honest limitations

The calculator deliberately ignores interest, so a high-yield savings account would actually get you there slightly faster than shown. It also assumes the same amount every month — if your income is irregular, plan around your worst months, not your best. Estimates only — educational, not financial advice.

FAQ

Savings Goal Calculator — common questions

How does the savings goal calculator work?

Enter your goal amount, how much you have already saved, and how many months you have to reach it. The calculator subtracts your current savings from the goal and divides by the months to show the monthly saving required. It assumes no interest or investment growth. Estimates only — not financial advice.

What if I have already saved more than my goal?

Then the amount left to save is $0 and the required monthly saving is $0 — you have hit the goal. Consider whether the target should grow, since prices creep up over time, or whether the extra belongs toward a different goal.

Where should I keep money for a savings goal?

For goals within the next few years, most people use a separate savings account — ideally one paying a higher yield — rather than investing it, because markets can dip right when you need the money. Keep it somewhere slightly inconvenient to spend from.

What if I cannot afford the monthly number?

You have three honest levers: extend the deadline, shrink the goal, or add income toward it. The calculator makes the trade-off visible — try adding a few months and watch how much the monthly number drops.
